ABOUT ABYA
ABYA is a professional association for yacht brokers, dealers and agents, with over 150 members based in the UK, South of France, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, Greece and the Balearics, but who sell boats across the world. Members sell new and second-hand boats from day boats to superyachts, and are all experienced professionals – many have also attended the intensive two-day ABYA Practical Yacht Brokerage course, well recognised within the industry for its range of expert speakers and practical content.
Whether you're thinking of buying or selling a boat, it makes sense to talk to an ABYA member broker or dealer:
- For the security of both buyer and seller, ABYA members are required to set up a client account with their bank that holds client monies in trust and does not form part of the broker's own accounts
- ABYA provides standard documents for the sale/purchase and listing of boats
- ABYA members hold Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance
- ABYA members work to the ABYA Code of Practice
- ABYA members have to keep up to date with legal and technical developments
There is a link to the Yachtworld.com database where you can see all the boats listed on Yachtworld.com by ABYA members.
Brokers and dealers are paid a percentage commission on completion of the sale, by the vendor, the % rate being advised at the beginning of the contract. This fee includes:
- advertising your boat in magazines, on their website, through their client list and at boat shows
- following up on all leads
- showing clients over the boat
- providing a contract to both parties which sets out the progress of the sale
- ensuring all the relevant paperwork is available – RCD compliance, VAT evidence, Bills of Sale, Builder's Certificate, Service History, etc.
They will also advise the vendor of all offers and negotiate with the purchaser as well as liaising with the surveyor and assist in re-negotiating the fee if this is appropriate.
ABYA members have to maintain their training and gain Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points.
