ABYA ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The 2011 ABYA Annual Conference was held at Dorney Lake, home of the Olympic rowing competition in 2012.
Providing in-depth training and information for brokers and other marine industry professionals, the event was deemed a huge success, with delegates coming from all over the country, some even flying in especially for the event.
Following an introduction by ABYA Chairman, Christian Moore, the proceedings were opened by a presentation on Branding and Positioning in the Marketplace by Chris Hellowell, MD of Cogent Design, a London based B2B marketing and communications agency. This was followed by an excellent presentation ‘Online Web Strategy’ by Laura Hodd, Marketing Manager of OceanStye. Laura focused on the key social networking tools and demonstrated how Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn worked for OceanStyle, who have offices in London, Monaco, Miami, Palma, Athens and Mumbai.
An excellent lunch was served in the hospitality suite overlooking the superb rowing facilities, owned by Eton School and to be used for the rowing competitions at next years Olympic Games.
The afternoon session was opened by Richard Lambert, an ABYA committee member and Managing Director of OceanStyle. Richard’s presentation centred on the research and financial modelling required when targeting new overseas markets.
The conference closed with an excellent presentation by PR legend, Alice Driscoll, MD of ADPR. Specialising in the marine sector, ADPR have been at the forefront of the business for a number of years. Alice’s presentation focused on maximising presence and opportunities and increasing ROI at Boat Shows.

ABYA & BRBA Boat Sales Qualification
The qualification, launched at the Southampton Boat Show in 2010, provided an opportunity for experienced brokers with 10+ years experience to apply via Grandfather Rights. There has been a good take-up of this, as well as some less experienced brokers applying for the logbooks. This is an industry-led qualification designed to provide recognition for the professionalism of many yacht brokers.
BROKERAGE CLIENT ACCOUNTS
A Client Account is mandatory for all ABYA members and their bank will provide a letter indemnifying the independent nature of the account. We advise ABYA members to ask their accountant to verify the account every year at audit.
Boat buyers and sellers are advised to find out about the broker they are using – are they members of a professional organisation? Do they have a good reputation? Ask around at the sailing club or marina.
All our members are listed on this website under Yacht Brokerage/Sales – Find a Broker. If you have a query, just call us – we are always pleased to help.

PUBLIC EVENTS - Our conferences are open to interested non members
